We all know that money is potentially dirty.   It gets passed around from person to person and place to place. But how dirty to be exact?  An unpublished study from New York University's Dirty Money Project found 3, 000 separate species of bacteria living on U. S. one-dollar bills, it is the first ever comprehensive analysis of DNA collected from dollar bills. Many of the species that were found on the bills through this study were able to cause disease to humans, with many showing antibiotic resistance. Paper money being one of the most commonly transmitted items throughout the world, makes it a major factor in how bacteria ridazin is transferred from person to person. "It was quite amazing to us, " researcher Jane Carlton said. "We actually found that microbes grow on money. " The samples came from 80 one-dollar bills collected from a Manhattan bank.   All in all, 1. 2 billion DNA segments were found on the collected bills, comprising a total of 320 gigabytes space of data.   About half the DNA collected came from human beings. While other life forms represented included bacteria, viruses, fungi, plant pathogens, horses ridazin, dogs and even white rhino. Among the bacteria identified, the most common of species was one responsible for acne. Other species identified included Bacillus cereus (which causes food-borne illness), Corynebacterium diphtheria (diphtheria), Escherichia coli (food poisoning), Helicobacter pylori (gastric ulcers), Staphylococcus aureus (skin infections), and even Bacillus anthracis (anthrax). Many of the species that could be identified carried antibiotic-resistant genes.
