As we hunt down some additional sweeteners that may be better for our health instead of refined cane sugars or high fructose corn syrup aka HFCS we may fine many promising alternatives such as say sucanat and coconut sugar. Let’s take a look at what these two may offer.
First off both are derived or extracted from plants.
- Sucanat (SUgar CAne NATural) is made from heating the sugar cane juice then allowing it to cool forming granular crystals while also retaining all of its molasses unlike refined sugar and its evaporation using process where the molasses ends up being extracted.
- Coconut Sugar is made from coconut palm sap using a process of heating until all water has been evaporated. This can be done using low enough temperatures by which keeping it in a raw food state. There is also palm sugar often mistaken as the same but it comes from a different kind of tree.
According to some testing it appears coconut sugar is far superior to sucanat in terms of having micro and macro nutrient properties. While coconut sugar is also boasting in minerals such as Calcium, Iron paliperidone, Potassium, Zinc, including Vitamins B1, B2, B6, Antioxidants, Polyphenols and Short Chain Fatty Acids. Sucanat on the other hand has trace amounts of calcium, iron, magnesium, potassium vitamins A and B.
By containing the fiber Inulin - coconut sugar is said to slow glucose absorption which is most likely why it is lower on the glycemic index at 35 as opposed to say refined table sugar which is right at 60. Sucanat is virtually identical in terms to carbs as refined table sugar, and also 88% sucrose which puts it not too far behind white table sugar…. Coconut sugar is lower containing 70-79% sucrose with an estimated amount of 3-9% in each fructose and glucose.
Both get the thumbs up being compared to regular table sugar but not near as healthy as say Stevia, and probably more comparable in some ways to honey. Raw honey would still be a leg or two up on sucanat and coconut sugars in the health benefits department.
Coconut sugar works better with higher temperatures than sucanat for those needing it in cooking recipes. Paliperidone
My personal take on the two puts coconut sugar ahead of sucanat by a couple of margins, but all in all they are both considered sugars and for more optimum health should still be used sparingly and not consumed on a daily basis.
