Cayenne is a popular spice in a variety of cuisines. It is employed variously in its fresh form, dried and powdered, and as dried flakes. You can find it at your local farmers market, grocery store or online.
My local Walmart now even carries an organic version. Wild Oats Marketplace USDA Organic Cayenne Pepper
It is also used as a key ingredient in a variety of hot sauces, particularly those employing vinegar as a preservative.
Cayenne pepper is often spread on sandwiches, sprinkled a top of food to add a spicy flavor. Buffalo wing sauce often contains cayenne and even some energy drinks have it as an ingredient too. I have some friends who use it on and in everything food related because the spicy flavor it magic to their taste buds, they even like it in a cup of hot cocoa! (Look for that Cayenne Pepper Hot Cocoa recipe this winter in a future part of this series.)
Getting a little thin?
Have you tired all those nasty chemical ridden products that promise to help with that baldness?
Have you ever thought about Cayenne Pepper?
Maybe you’ve heard about it? Maybe you haven’t?
If you have please leave a comment sharing the details of your experience, when you share it helps others who read too.
They say one of the main reasons for baldness is due to reduction in the circulation of blood. Cayenne pepper when applied on the scalp increases the circulation of blood by causing irritation in the scalp, but remember any irritation would be for a good cause.
Try it and let us know how it goes!
Cayenne Pepper is not just a pepper, I promise this awesome pepper has a whole lot going for it. Below I have included a small snippet with some nutrition information from wikipedia.org.
(Nutrition information from: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cayenne_pepper
“Cayenne pepper, by weight, is relatively high in vitamin A. It also contains vitamin B6, vitamin E, vitamin C, riboflavin, potassium, and manganese. However, given the very small amount of cayenne pepper typically consumed in a serving, it makes a negligible contribution to overall dietary intake of these nutrients.
Cayenne pepper consumption dilates the blood vessels and speeds the metabolism due to the high amounts of capsaicin. With the consumption of cayenne peppers, the amount of heat the human body puts off is influenced. In animal studies, capsaicin has the ability to boost metabolism, which in turn causes weight loss. This increases circulation and blood flow to all major organs which facilitates oxygen and nutrient delivery. Cayenne pepper may support a healthy energy balance while suppressing appetite. Capsaicin has been shown to increase energy expenditure, so acts as a metabolism booster and is beneficial in long-term weight loss. A correlation has been shown between substrate oxidation and capsaicin. Capsaicin treatment sustained fat oxidation during weight maintenance, but did not affect on weight regain after modest weight loss.
In a low-concentration cream applied to the skin, capsaicin has no meaningful effect in helping relieve neuropathic pain; rather, it causes skin irritation.
Cayenne pepper is also claimed to be an aphrodisiac because it contains capsaicin. It has also been shown to aid in the oxidation of adipose tissue, regulate high blood pressure, promote healthy liver function and tissue production, help regulate the digestive system, and promote healthy mucus production in the membranes that line internal organs.”

She doesn’t get out shopping much and even with grocery shopping it can be hard, she’s older and she’s stuck in her old ways. She doesn’t realize that organic is better…well because in her time they didn’t have such a thing as going to the local market and it having a “organic section” because it was all organic then, right? I didn’t buy all organic and I don’t even know if this was all GMO free but my goal here was to find items that I knew she could find where she lives and at stores she can easily access since her trips to the store are limited.
Tell Similac, Enfamil and Good Start to wean themselves from GMOs in their infant formula. GMO Insiders are calling on the three largest U.S. infant formula manufacturers Similac, Enfamil, and Good Start to remove their GMO ingredients, as there are mounting concerns about the health of GMOs, particularly for infants, whose immune systems are not fully developed. Of course we recommend breastfeeding infants first but when parents or infants can’t we recommend non-GMO alternatives.
Many informed parents that cannot breastfeed feel helpless when they turn to the alternatives in the marketplace. The synthetics, the GMOs and the chemical laden formulas can be extremely overwhelming for a new parent. Here at GMO Inside our goal is to inform the parent and empower you with the best tools we could find readily available for you to feed your baby safely. Join us in asking Similac, Enfamil and Good Start to remove their GMO ingredients: http://
Petroleum jelly is really toxic to our skin but ages ago your Mom probably learned from her Mama that Vaseline was good for makeup remover, dry skin and the list goes on. It’s been around for 100+ years but their are some major concerns with impurities in the manufacturing process. Petrolatum is found in crude oil and its by-products.
n 1859 a 22-year-old chemist from Brooklyn, NY named Robert Augustus Chesebrough went to Pennsylvania to investigate an oil well. Oil was a burgeoning industry and Chesebrough hoped to profit from it.
While investigating the site, Chesebrough observed that oil workers would smear this white gooey residue (that they called “rod wax”) from the drills onto burns and cuts on their skin and it appeared to aid in the healing process. Chesebrough took samples back to New York and began experimenting with the substance until he was able to extract what would become petroleum jelly.
In 1870 he began marketing his Vaseline product. He marketed it as an oiling product for leather, a lubricant, and for medicinal uses for chapped skin, blisters, burns, sunburns, cuts and for keeping wounds clean by sealing them off. He even marketed petroleum jelly as an aid for rheumatism and as hair pomade (Vaseline Pomade). In the past women used it to beautify the complexion (Vaseline Cold Cream) and on eyebrows and eyelashes believing it would help them grow. (Today some dermatologists suggest that women allergic to mascara use petroleum jelly on lashes to make them appear thicker and longer.) Within ten years Vaseline was in nearly every household.

Pita*ahh Chips Smoke Havarti – Snack Attack Part 1 – Road Trip Snacking
Simply Sprouted “Way better snacks” Pita*ahh Chips are tasty to the taste buds.
What first caught my eye at our local health food store was one it was NON GMO, two it was Pita and three it was smoked Havarti cheese! Pita chips with smoked Havarti cheese? YUM! NON GMO? YES! They are also made with heritage grains Red Fife and Spelt which give it a delicious soft pita chip. They are easy on the teeth and not hard like Stacy’s Pita chips. I wanted to be sure to mention this point because I know some folks love pita chips but stay away from them because they can be a bit hard on the teeth. This is the only flavor I have tried of their Pita*ahh Chips but I have a plan to pick up some more and try every flavor they have since I love me some good for you pita chips.
Another thing that turns on a health junk junkie is when the ingredients are simple, real and readable.
From the Way better snacks website they say-
“In keeping with our promise to remember to always be better, our recipes limit our ingredients to only those necessary to produce a great tasting and nutritious product. No fillers. No preservatives. All of our ingredients are all-natural, non-GMO (not genetically modified) and the highest quality ingredients available. And they can all be easily pronounced!”
From the bag-
“Havarti Cheese Pita-Ahh Chips they are non GMO Verified, Certified Kosher, Excellent source of whole grains, low sodium, good source of fiber, free of trans fat, artificial colors, flavors or preservatives.”
“Ingredients: Organic sprouted red fife wheat, whole spelt, sunflower oil, tapioca starch, yeast, pure cane sugar, smoked Havarti seasoning (Organic cheddar cheese, cultured pasteurized milk, salt, enzymes, organic non-fat milk, organic whey, salt disodium phosphate, garlic, hickory smoke powder, sea salt).”
Way Better Snacks say they are proud of their simple ingredients and they should be. I don’t know about you but I like feeling great about eating good. No one feels good after eating MSG chips and almost all if not all have fillers, preservatives, MSG, High Fructose Corn Syrup and the list goes on if you wanted to pick up a quick snack at the mini mart gas station on a road trip. Instead find yourself a health food store on your GPS this summer’s road trip or stock up before you leave.
Happy Summer, sunny days and way better snacks!
In short the answer is neither. These are just big manufacturer tactics to lure you in to think you are being more “health conscience” about what you use as a sweetener. A “safe” alternative to sugar without the extra calories so you can watch your weight. These feed into the low-fat, sugar-free diets that generate this type of thinking.
What chemicals are behind these so called “safe” alternatives to sugar? Splenda (sucralose) and Equal/NutraSweet (aspartame) are artificial sweetener chemicals to make you think you are using a safe health conscience alternative route but in fact your are feeding your body neurotoxic poisons. Both artificial sweeteners have been shown in the laboratory to damage gut microbiota and harm brain cells. Studies show that both sucralose and aspartame have both been linked to cancer as well.
Splenda, which is fairly newer to the game, has been marketed as a derivative of sugar, implying that it is safer and more versatile than other artificial sweeteners on the market. But in reality, Splenda is an organochlorine pesticide compound similar to DDT, PCBs, and other harmful substances that nobody would ever willingly consume as food if they were aware of the harmful effects that follow.
Although, splenda has been marketed as a safe option for diabetics, studies have shown that it in fact raises boll sugar levels. The chemicals alter the metabolic parameters in a way that it will actually sustain diabetes. Splenda has also been shown to bioaccumulate in the body, meaning the body does not know how to process it so it simply stores it away, typically in fat tissue or even in the brain.
So you would think that equal and nutrasweet could be a safer option because its been around for a long time, right? Wrong, in fact it acts similar to splenda as in it triggers an unhealthy metabolic response that tells the brain it is receiving sugar when it actually is not. The body reacts by secreting hormones, potentially leading to chemical imbalance, weight gain, and other symptoms.
The chemical behind this is aspartame. In fact, aspartame is an acid-creating substance that causes the body to store it away in fat tissue (similar to splenda/sucralose). Over time, the bioaccumulation of this chemical compound results in weight gain and obesity. It will also intensify cravings for sweets and junk food, causing people to overeat and potentiallyput on more weight.
So what is the safe alternative?
One healthy option is Stevia. Stevia is an all-natural sweetener that comes from the stevia plant. Like other artificial sweeteners, stevia is sweet but does not contain refined sugar. But in fact does not trick the brain in the same ways as aspartame and sucralose, making it a much healthier option.
A much healthier approach is to cut out all refined sugar products and “cheap” carbohydrates. Replacing them with whole foods rich in beneficial fats and micronutrients. This is a good first step to cutting out sugar addiction for good. With small amounts of natural sugar in the form of sweet fruits this process will be much easier on you, and can be a beneficial part of a healthy diet.
